General information
Layne practiced law for more than 40 years—practicing in Utah beginning in 1978 and in Nevada beginning in 1981. In 2002, after practicing with several firms, he opened his own law practice and Rushforth Firm Ltd. began practicing law. Layne retired at the end of 2025.
Throughout his career, Layne established the Golden Rule as the “prime directive” of his practice. His goal was to treat clients, trustees, beneficiaries, opposing parties, and opposing counsel as he would want to be treated in their situations, even when that approach was not reciprocated. He sought to accomplish each client’s goals in the least costly manner and encouraged settlements, mediation, and other nonjudicial techniques when appropriate.
Layne and his wife, Sharon, celebrated 50 years of marriage on February 12, 2026. Their family includes six children, 24 grandchildren, two grandchildren-in-law, and one great-granddaughter. They enjoy family time and serve together as Senior Mission Office Support Advisers for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
